Harold Bell Wright traveled to the Ozarks to regain his strength and help his ailing health, and he discovered that the region's scenic beauty brought more than just peace and renewed health, it also inspired him to write one of the most widely read books in publishing history, The Shepherd of the Hills. The book sparked a nationwide fascination with the Ozark Mountains and brought many tourists to the area. It was at the homestead of John and Anna Ross, settled on a ridge near Mutton Hollow, that Wright stayed for the summer of 1896, and eight summers thereafter. The events and settler's stories of Mutton Hollow formed the plot and story line for Wright's famous book which was published in 1907.
After the Shepherd of the Hills was published, Wright's writing career steamed ahead and the book's overnight success meant that it was sold in several languages and inspired more than four movie versions. Wright went on to write 19 other books, several scripts for plays and numerous magazine articles before his death in 1944. Bell's legendary book, and the homestead where he summered is today one of Branson's most famous attractions, The
Shepherd of the Hills Branson Homestead and Outdoor Theatre.
